Independent samples t-test

Abstract
Background: Patients undergoing major open abdominal surgery are at high risk of postoperative complications. This study aimed to examine the effects of applying the nursing process on postoperative complications, length of hospital stay, discharge readiness, and patient satisfaction.
Methods: A quasi-experimental study using a non-equivalent control group design was conducted among 60 patients undergoing major open abdominal surgery. Participants were assigned to a control group (n = 30), which received standard nursing care, and an experimental group (n = 30), which received care based on a developed nursing process approach. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Chi-square test, Fisher’s exact test, Multiple Logistic Regression, ANCOVA, and Independent-samples t-test.
Results: After adjustment for age, body mass index, and comorbidities, the experimental group had a significantly lower rate of postoperative complications than the control group (23.33% vs. 70.00%, p < .001, Adjusted OR = 0.11, 95% CI = 0.03–0.37), particularly postoperative ileus (16.67% vs. 50.00%, p = .007, Adjusted OR = 0.18, 95% CI = 0.05–0.62). No significant difference was found in length of hospital stay between the two groups (p = .598). However, discharge readiness scores and satisfaction levels were significantly higher in the experimental group than in the control group (p < .001).
Conclusion: Applying the nursing process reduced postoperative complications and improved discharge readiness and patient satisfaction. The nursing process should be promoted as a standard approach for caring for patients undergoing major open abdominal surgery.
Keywords: Nursing process, Postoperative complications, Readiness for discharge, Patient satisfaction
