Job burnout and problem coping strategies among employees of Government Pharmaceutical Organization.

Abstract

Background : Job burnout is a type of occupational stress mostly, refers to problems of employees who are disengaged and demotivated in their jobs.

Objective : To describe the level of job burnout, coping strategies and to determine factors related to job burnout among employees of the Government Pharmaceutical Organization.

Design : Cross sectional descriptive study.

Setting : The Government Pharmaceutical Organization Bangkok, Thailand.

Materials and Methods : Data were obtained from the employees of the Government Pharmaceutical Organization from August to October 2015. A total of 360 participants were recruited. Participants completed four questionnaires regarding the demographic characteristics, environment at the working condition, Job Burnout Inventory (MBI-GS) and problem coping strategy, the data were analyzed using percentage, mean, standard deviation, independent t-test, One way ANOVA and multiple linear regression.

Results : The findings revealed the level of job burnout among participants in three dimensions which were low level of emotional exhaustion (gif.latex?^{} = 2.70; SD = 1.43), low level of cynicism ( = 2.48; SD =1.06) and moderate level of reduced personal accomplishment ( = 3.48; SD = 0.50). Regarding the multivariate analysis, the statistically significant factors associated with emotional exhausted burnout were gender, age, job/responsibilities, relationship, working position, job performance and avoidance coping strategies. Job responsibilities, relationship, working position and avoidance coping strategies were significantly associated with cynicism burnout. Also, working position was significantly associated with reduced personal accomplishment burnout.

Conclusion : This finding can be used for the department of human resource to develop new promotion programs in order to help employees to cope with burnout and using positive coping strategies and promote the quality of life among the employees.
