Abstract

Calciphylaxis or calcific uremic arteriolopathy (CUA) is a serious skin disorder of arteriolar calcification that can produce subcutaneous plaques, nodules, and subsequently necrotic ulcers skin lesions. CUA is usually associated with chronic kidney disease and endstage renal failure. The risk factors of CUA include obesity, diabetes mellitus, female gender, high product of calcium and phosphate, and use of coumadin anticoagulant. Furthermore, it is associated with high mortality rate. Therefore, early identification, proper evaluation, appropriate salvage therapy, and prevention can minimize long-term morbidity and mortality.
