Abstract

Alcohol drinking trends among ethnic adolescents are continuously increasing. One of the important factors in initiating or continuing alcohol consumption is the alcohol expectancy. However, studies on the alcohol expectancy and drinking behavior among ethnic adolescents are still limited. Therefore, the objective of this research was to study the alcohol drinking behavior and the alcohol expectancy among ethnic adolescents. This study was conducted as a cross-sectional study. The sample size consisted of ethnic adolescents in secondary school grades 1-3, selected through proportionate stratified random sampling, totaling 230 participants. The research instrument was a questionnaire divided into 4 parts: personal data, the positive alcohol expectancies, the negative alcohol expectancies, and an Alcohol Use Identification (AUDIT). The statistical methods used frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, and Chi-square tests. The results of the study showed that 69.1% of the participants were female, with an average age of 14.44 years (SD: 1.26). Among the sample, 53.0% had a moderate level of positive outcome expectations, 47.4% had a low level of negative outcome expectations, and 93.5% were classified as low-risk drinkers. Conversely, 6.5% of the participants engaged in risky and dangerous drinking behaviors. Participants with different levels of positive outcome expectations exhibited significantly different levels of risk related to alcohol drinking behavior (p-value < .01). Research implications: Positive outcome expectations are a factor related to alcohol drinking behavior. Therefore, programs aimed at preventing and reducing alcohol consumption among ethnic adolescents should consider the influence of positive outcome expectations as a crucial component in program development.
