Management of Children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD): Psychiatric Nurse’s Role

Abstract

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a syndrome caused by brain dysfunction that affects the patient’s behavior, emotions, and daily functioning, marked by inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity, stemming from brain dysfunction. These core symptoms primarily affect school-aged children, significantly impacting their learning and social integration. ADHD's origins are complex, involving genetics, impaired brain neurotransmitter function, and environmental factors. Without proper intervention, ADHD can have a profound impact on the child, family, and society, increasing the risk of developing future psychiatric and behavioral problems. Effective treatment of ADHD requires a multidisciplinary approach, combining behavioral modification, psychological and educational support, and medication. This relies heavily on collaboration among healthcare professionals, parents, and teachers. This article highlights the crucial role of nurses in ADHD care, including initial assessment and screening, providing guidance to parents and teachers, continuous monitoring and evaluation of care, promoting life skills and adaptive behaviors, as well as implementing proactive interventions in the community and school settings.
