The Application of Artificial Intelligence in Instructional Design for Pre-service Teachers

Abstract

In an era of rapid technological transformation, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become a vital component in instructional design, particularly in higher education institutions that prepare future educators. AI is no longer merely a supplementary tool; it serves as a key mechanism for designing flexible learning systems that can be adapted to individual learners. AI can support pre-service teachers in instructional design by analyzing learner data to personalize learning pathways, generating and refining lesson plans, learning activities, and instructional materials, and assisting in the design of assessment and evaluation. It also promotes the development of essential 21st-century skills such as critical thinking, self-directed learning, and systems-based problem solving. Consequently, the teacher’s role is shifting from a transmitter of knowledge to a designer, evaluator, and facilitator of learning who integrates technology with ethical and human-centered responsibility.

This academic article examines three main aspects: the use of AI by higher education students, the design of learning experiences using AI, and the ethical considerations in AI-driven instructional design. It highlights how AI can be leveraged to create adaptive and personalized learning environments while addressing critical issues of fairness, transparency, and data privacy. The knowledge presented here provides a practical framework for empowering pre-service teachers to utilize AI effectively in designing high-quality and ethically sound learning experiences. Furthermore, it offers insights for improving education at both curriculum and classroom levels, ensuring that technological integration supports not only academic achievement but also the holistic development of learners in an ethical and sustainable manner.
