The Effects of a Self-Management Support Program on Knowledge Regarding Kidney Function Decline among Patients with Stage 3 Chronic Kidney Disease in the Chronic Disease Clinic at Phan Hospital

Abstract

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a major public health problem at both national and global levels, with a continuously increasing trend. The implementation of a self-management support program, based on self-management support concepts, enables patients to manage their condition appropriately and effectively, and may help delay the progression of renal function decline. This study aimed to examine the effects of a self-management support program on renal function decline, as well as on knowledge, awareness, and self-management skills among patients. The sample consisted of 200 patients with stage 3 CKD, divided into two groups: 100 patients receiving usual care and 100 patients receiving the self-management support program. Data were analyzed using t-test, exact probability test, and the effectiveness of the program was evaluated using multivariable logistic regression.

The results showed the levels of knowledge, awareness, and self-management skills among patients with stage 3 chronic kidney disease in the intervention group were significantly higher than those in the group receiving the standard program, with statistical significance at p < 0.001. The use of the program also significantly reduced the progression of kidney deterioration by 0.2 times (p < 0.001)

The findings suggest that the self-management support program can be implemented to standardize patient care and improve the quality of nursing practice.
