The Effect of a Smoking Simulation Kit Innovation on Knowledge Regarding the Dangers of Cigarettes and Electronic Cigarettes Among Middle School Students in Wiang Kaen District, Chiang Rai Province

Abstract

This study investigated the effects of a Smoking Simulation Kit Innovation on knowledge regarding the dangers of cigarettes and electronic cigarettes among middle school students in Wiang Kaen District, Chiang Rai Province. The research design was quasi-experimental, consisting of a control group and an experimental group. The objectives were to compare knowledge scores between students in the control and experimental groups, and to assess student satisfaction with a Smoking Simulation Kit.

Data were collected at Por Wittaya School, Wiang Kaen District, Chiang Rai Province, between April and June 2025. The sample consisted of 40 Matthayom 2, divided into an experimental group (n=20) and a control group (n=20) through cluster sampling. The control group received a standard instructional program, while the experimental group received the standard program supplemented by the smoking simulation innovation. Data collection instruments included a 20 item pre- and post-test questionnaire on the dangers of smoking (reliability = 0.71) and an 8-item satisfaction questionnaire for the experimental group.

The results revealed that the experimental group demonstrated a significantly higher increase in mean knowledge scores compared to the control group (p = 0.010). Specifically, the mean knowledge score in the experimental group increased by 3.6 points SD ± 2.58, whereas the control group increased by 1.53 points. SD ± 2.28 Furthermore, the experimental group reported a satisfaction rate of 90.13% regarding the innovation. Participants noted that the simulation provided clear visualization of changes in odor and color. These findings suggest that integrating the smoking simulation innovation into standard instruction effectively increases student knowledge and yields high user satisfaction. Therefore, this innovation should be continuously utilized as an instructional medium.
