Abstract

This quasi-experimental study aimed to examine the effects of a preoperative preparation program on self-care behavior after abdominal laparoscopic surgery. The sample consisted of sixty participants who underwent laparoscopic surgery at the Minimally Invasive Surgery Ward, Buddhachinaracha Medical Center, Buddhachinaraj Hospital, Phitsanulok, between October 2023 and February 2024.  The participants were divided into an experimental group and a control group with 30 participants in each cohort. The experimental group received a preoperative preparation program for laparoscopic surgery based on Orem's Self-Care Theory, while the control group received routine preoperative preparation for laparoscopic surgery. The data collection instruments consisted of a personal data record form and a self-care behavior assessment questionnaire for patients after laparoscopic surgery, which had a reliability coefficient of .80. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Chi-square test, and Mann-Whitney U test.

The results revealed that the experimental group demonstrated significantly better self-care behavior scores after laparoscopic surgery than the control group in the areas of complication prevention, daily activity performance, and emotional and psychological well-being (p-value < 0.001). The overall self-care behaviors were also statistically significantly better than the control group
(p-value < 0.001), with the overall self-care behaviors rated at a high level.

The preoperative preparation program assisted patients to adopt proper self-care behaviors after laparoscopic surgery. Therefore, this program should be implemented for patients undergoing laparoscopic surgery to ensure correct postoperative self-care practices, promote faster recovery, and prevent postoperative complications.
