Introduction: Depression is a common mental health problem among older adults, affecting
quality of life, physical and mental health, and increasing the risk of suicide. The World Health
Organization reported that more than 280 million people worldwide suffer from depression. In
Thailand, the prevalence of depression has continuously increased, particularly in Mae Taeng
District, Chiang Mai Province, where 92.95% of older adults were found to be at risk of depression.
Therefore, developing an effective depression prevention model is urgently needed.
Methodology: This quasi-experimental study aimed to examine the effects of a depression
prevention model among older adults in San Mahaphon Subdistrict, Mae Taeng District, Chiang
Mai Province. Participants were selected using simple random sampling and divided into two
groups, with 38 participants in each group. The experimental group received the intervention
program, while the control group did not receive the program. The intervention was conducted over five weeks, with a three-month follow-up period. Data were analyzed using paired t-test
and independent t-test.
Results: After participating in the program, the experimental group showed significantly lower
stress and depression scores compared with the pre-intervention period (p<0.001). In addition,
knowledge scores regarding depression prevention significantly increased (p<0.001), both within
the experimental group and in comparison with the control group.
Conclusion: the depression prevention model for older adults effectively reduced the risk of
depression, promoted mental well-being, and improved quality of life among older adults.
Furthermore, the model can be applied as a sustainable community-based mental health
promotion approach.
