Self-perception and fall prevention behaviors of the elderly at Nam Daeng Subdistrict, Mueang District, Chachoengsao Province.
Main Article Content
Abstract
The global elderly population is continuously increasing, including in Thailand, which is now officially recognized as an aged society. In addition to NCDs, older adults commonly found geriatric syndromes. Falls and fall-related complications have significant impacts on both health and social issues. Knowledge alone is not sufficient for effective fall prevention. Therefore, the theory of self-perception was also applied.
This cross-sectional study aimed to: 1) study self-perception in the elderly, 2) study fall prevention behaviors among the elderly, 3) investigate fall incidents of the elderly, 4) study the relationship between self-perception and fall incidents of the elderly, and 5) explore the relationship between self-perception and fall prevention behaviors in the elderly. The study used a descriptive research design. The samples were 240 elderly individuals aged 60 and above living in NamDaeng Subdistrict, Mueang District, Chachoengsao Province. The participants were selected using non-probability sampling and purposive sampling based on specified criteria. Data were collected using a questionnaire developed by the researcher, based on a literature review, and the tool's reliability was verified using Cronbach’s alpha coefficient. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency distribution, percentage, mean, and standard deviation. Relationships were analyzed using the Chi-square test.
Research findings: The study found that most participants had a moderate level of self-perception and fall prevention behavior. Moreover, 80.00% had no history of falls in the past six months. It was found that self-perception was significantly associated with fall prevention behavior (Chi-Square = 12.5, Sig = 0.014) and fall incidents among the elderly (Chi-Square = 8.28, Sig = 0.016) at a statistical significance level of 0.05. According to the study results, it is recommended to promote awareness and enhance self-perception, as well as encourage appropriate fall-prevention behaviors among the elderly.
