THE EFFECTS OF HEALTH LITERACY AND SELF-MANAGEMENT BEHAVIORS DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM AMONG ELDERLY WITH HYPERTENSION, PHRA NAKHON SRI AYUTTHAYA PROVINCE

Abstract

The objective of this quasi-experimental research was to study the effects of health literacy and self-management behaviors development model among elderly with hypertension. The samples were divided into experimental group, and the control group consisted of 2 groups of 33 persons each, totaling 66 persons and selected by multistage random sampling. Interventions were health literacy and self-management behaviors development program that include education, demonstrations, and home visits.Data collected with a questionnaire. Data were analyzed by the descriptive statistics, and t-test statistic.

The research showed that after the health literacy and self-management behaviors development program, the experimental group had higher health literacy and self-management behaviors than before enrolling in the program and higher than the control group with statistically significant at the .05 level. The results can be interpreted that the health literacy and self-management behaviors development program could be applied to promote people to have health literacy and self-management behaviors, which can further reduce the risk of illness with hypertension.
