Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is a transitional condition associated with an increased likelihood of progression to dementia. Evidence on its magnitude and associated factors in community settings is therefore important for planning cognitive screening and brain-health promotion. This cross-sectional analytical study aimed to: (1) determine the prevalence of mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and (2) identify factors associated with mild cognitive impairment among older adults in Tha Tum Subdistrict, Tha Tum District, Surin Province, Thailand. The sample comprised 385 adults aged 60 years or older, selected using proportionate stratified sampling followed by simple random sampling within each area. Data were collected from October 15, 2025, to March 20, 2026, using questionnaires on personal characteristics, health status, health behaviors, and psychosocial factors, together with the ADL, IADL, TGDS-15, and Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA). A MoCA score of <25, after adjustment for educational level, was used as the criterion for MCI. Descriptive statistics, univariate analysis, and multiple logistic regression were applied, with statistical significance set at 0.05
The prevalence of mild cognitive impairment was 87.01% (95% CI: 83.29 - 90.01), with prevalence estimates of 77.42% among participants aged 60 - 70 years, 91.62% among those aged 71- 80 years, and 100% among those aged 81 years or older. When factors were grouped by direction of association, older age was associated with higher odds of MCI (ORadj 2.907, 95% CI 1.047 - 8.106). Factors associated with lower odds of MCI were higher educational attainment (ORadj 0.113, 95% CI 0.053-0.239), participation in leisure activities (ORadj 0.114, 95% CI 0.022 - 0.590), and mobile phone and communication application use (ORadj 0.55, 95% CI 0.332-0.927). These findings support proactive cognitive screening among older adults, particularly those of advanced age, together with community-based promotion of lifelong learning, cognitively stimulating activities, and the appropriate use of mobile phones and applications to promote cognitive health among community-dwelling older adults.
