Quality of sleep among Intensive Care Unit Nurses in Thailand.

Objective : To study the quality of sleep and related factors among intensive care unit nurses in Thailand
Design : Cross-sectional descriptive study
Setting : Intensive care unit of governmental hospitals with 300+ beds
Subjects : Eight hundred and nine nurses with 1 year of work experience in intensive care units who were stratified randomly selected from all potential subjects. Among these, 627 nurses responded to the questionnaire (response rate 81.2%).
Methods : The data were collected by mailed questionnaires and analyzed in terms of frequency, percentage, average, the part deviates the standard, and Chi-square test.
Result : The prevalence of quality of sleep (T-PSQI Score 6) and insomnia among the study subject were 81.9 % and 30.4 %, respectively. Components that affected the quality of sleep included drinking beverage with drinking beverage with caffeine, ranking of job, extended work shift, place of sleep or rest, presence of light and sound (p < 0.05), and job characteristics at the intensive care unit and the inconvenience of bed (p < 0.01).
Conclusion : Intensive care unit nurses had poor quality of sleep and personal, extended work shift, and environmental factors were related to quality of sleep.
