The Effectiveness of Newborn Hearing Screening test at Krathumban Hospital, Samut Sakhorn Province
Keywords:

This retrospective descriptive study aimed to: (1) examine the results of newborn hearing screening at Krathum Baen Hospital, and (2) identify factors associated with hearing abnormalities among newborns. The study reviewed medical records of all live-born infants delivered at Krathum Baen Hospital, totaling 5,474 newborns. Data were collected using a hearing screening record form and a questionnaire on related risk factors. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and the Chi-square test. The results revealed that:
1.1 A total of 915 newborns were identified as being at risk for hearing impairment, accounting for 16.7% of the 5,474 newborns screened.
1.2 Factors significantly associated with failure of the hearing screening test among newborns included admission to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) for more than five days, craniofacial abnormalities, and a family history of congenital or childhood hearing impairment (p< 0.05).
1.3 Challenges identified in the hearing screening program at Krathum Baen Hospital included 25 newborns who failed the third hearing screening test and subsequently underwent Automated Auditory Brainstem Response (AABR) and diagnostic Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR) testing. Of these, nine newborns were diagnosed with abnormal hearing results and were referred for hearing rehabilitation and developmental follow-up.
The findings highlight the outcomes of newborn hearing screening and the clinical characteristics of at-risk newborns. Nurses should recognize the importance of universal newborn hearing screening and ensure continuous developmental monitoring, particularly language development, among infants identified with hearing abnormalities. Long-term follow-up should be implemented to promote early intervention and optimize developmental outcomes.
