Effectiveness of a Podcast-Based Intervention to Promote Sexual Health Literacy for Preventing Unintended Adolescent Pregnancy among Grade 6 Students

This quasi-experimental study aimed to: (1) evaluate the quality of a podcast designed to promote sexual health literacy; (2) compare students’ sexual health literacy across three time points—pre-intervention, post-intervention, and follow-up; and (3) examine students’ opinions toward the podcast. The sample consisted of 66 sixth-grade students selected using purposive sampling. Sexual health literacy was assessed at three intervals: before the intervention, one week after the intervention, and at a two-month follow-up. The research instrument was a podcast entitled “Love Pang: Safe Love for Thai Adolescents—Preventing Unintended Pregnancy.” Data were analyzed using mean, standard deviation, and paired t-test. The results revealed that:
1. The overall quality of the podcast was rated at a very good level.
2. The mean score of sexual health literacy after the intervention was significantly higher than before the intervention at the .01 level (M= 14.00, SD= 3.03; M= 7.70, SD= 3.02). At the follow-up phase, the mean score (M= 13.80, SD= 3.05) remained significantly higher than the pre-intervention level (p< .01). No significant difference was found between post-intervention and follow-up scores, indicating knowledge retention consistent with the concept of spaced learning.
3. Students’ opinions toward the podcast were at the highest level (M = 4.58, SD = 0.75).
In conclusion, the podcast is an effective innovation for enhancing and sustaining sexual health literacy among students. Nurses and multidisciplinary teams can utilize this tool as a supplementary resource in sexuality education curricula to support the prevention and reduction of unintended adolescent pregnancy.
