Acute Flaccid Paralysis (AFP) surveillance system in Thailand, 2008 – 2012

Abstract

AFP surveillance is a key strategy of the Global polio eradication program. AFP surveillance indicators in Thailand during 2008 - 2012 showed 1.58 as minimum AFP rate/100,000 population under 15 years and 2.36 as maximum rate. The proportion of two adequate stool collections was between 67.2 - 79.7% in the past five years. Results of virus isolation presented 45 Sabin–like polioviruses and 80 non-polio enteroviruses. It indicates between 66.03 - 71.69% of AFP cases were investigated within 48 hours of receiving report and 73.18 - 91.61% of them were followed-up at 60 days after onset of weakness. AFP weekly report (zero report) showed 84.89 - 99.61% of completeness and 84.88 - 99.46% of timeliness. To ensure that polio will not be re-emerge in Thailand, AFP surveillance system has been continuously strengthened.
