A surveillance of avian influenza in poultry by using a One Health approach, Buengkan province, Thailand, 2015

Abstract

Regarding to an increasing problem of emerging and re- emerging infectious diseases ( EIDs) , many organizations in Buengkan province conducted activities of prevention and control to prevent the EIDs by using a framework of One Health strategy. Cooperating task forces with multi-disciplinary functions and expanding the operational plan by asking cooperation with Bolikhamsai province, Lao PDR were implemented into study areas. The objectives of the study were to surveillance avian influenza along border areas (2) to expand a network of prevention and control program for avian influenza with Bolikhamsai province and (3) to plan further surveillance program of avian influenza by using a One Health approach. A descriptive cross sectional study was conducted between March 1 and July 31, 2015. Cloacal swab samples from poultry were collected to test avian influenza by using RT-PCR tested by a private company and operational plan implemented into the study areas were observed. Results revealed that none of the samples (0/180) were a positive result for avian influenza and Memorandum of Understanding of public health between Buengkan province and Bolikhamsai province in a contribution of sharing surveillance information, EIDs and Re-EIDs drill and site visit of personal in both sites were launched. From the observation of the implementation plan, sharing information via social network could be a supportive factor in getting through a successful program of One Health network. That information was used as an input to establish the Emergency Operation Center at a provincial level to response any EIDs. However, the laboratory results from the private company might be making the result unreliable if compared to the result from a reference laboratory.
