Investigation on injuries and deaths related to a road traffic crash between a bus and an 18-wheeled truck on the Highway No.1 (Nakhon Sawan-Tak) in Kamphaengphet, Thailand, 16 February 2016

Abstract

Backgrounds: On 16 February 2016, officers from the Office of Disease Prevention and Control 3 in Nakhon Sawan Province conducted an investigation on a road traffic crash between a bus and an 18- wheeled truck with local authorities in order to describe the event, identify the factors affecting injury and death, and implement specific interventions to prevent road traffic injuries in the future. The accident occurred on the Highway No. 1 (Nakhonsawan-Tak) in Khlong Khlung District, Kamphaengphet Province, Thailand.
Methods: A descriptive study was conducted by gathering data from medical documents, physical investigation of scene and interviewing those involved in the event. The data were analyzed by using the Haddon matrix model.
Results: The accident affected 54 people (43 Myanmar and 11 Thai), with age ranged between 17-50 years. Most of them were injured by hitting with objects inside the bus. Leg injury was the most common type of injury (21.31%).
Conclusions: This accident occurred when the driver of the double- decker bus carelessly passed the other car and collided with the 18- wheeled truck. After the accident, street lamps and signs for traffic diversions were provided on the roads of the area to prevent further accidents.
