Surveillance system evaluation of hand, foot and mouth disease and enterovirus infection in Sanpatong hospital, Chiangmai province, 2015

Abstract

Background: The hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) and Herpangina (HA) in Chiang Mai reported 173 case in 2015 and mobility rate was 234.82 cases per 100,000 popu;ation. No fatal case was reported. But the incidence of HFMD and HA was higher that 5-years median in every months. Thus we conducted surveillance evaluation with aimed to determine the characteristic of both qualitative and quantitative attributes of HFMD and HA surveillance in Sanpatong Hospital.
Methods: We conducted cross-sectional and evaluated for surveillance system of hand-foot-mouth disease and severe enterovirus infection in Sanpatong hospital. Both quantitative and qualitative attributes were evaluated. We collected data by review medical record and fill in medical record form and conducted in-depth interview among stakeholders in the system.
Results: The sensitivity of hand-foot-mouth disease and herpangina was 86.78% and predictive value positive was 61.04%. Sensitivity of enterovirus infection was 0% and predictive value positive could not be calculated. Representativeness of male: female ratio showed similar between reported and medical record reviews (1.14:1 vs 1.12:1). And median age was also similar (2 years). Data quality in correct sex was 99.04%, correct age was 98.80% and correct ill date was 18.60%. Timeliness showed 88.60%.
Conclusions: The sensitivity of HFMD and HA was good, predictive value positive was fair. The sensitivity of severe enterovirus infection was not good due to lack of information sharing to the clinicians and nurses.
