Abstract

Background: On July 16, 2012, infection control obstetric ward nurse was notified a cluster of 6 newborns with omphalitis. An investigation was carried out by infection control unit and infection control ward nurses during July, 18 – 27, 2012 and found 2 addition cases. Objective: An investigation was carried out with objectives to confirm diagnosis and outbreak, to describe characteristics of this outbreak and to implement prevention and control measures.
Method: A descriptive study was conducted among newborns with omphalitis. Investigators were observed and interviewed health personnel regarding to the processes from delivery to discharge, environmental survey and bacterial testing were performed among the related wards.
Results: Of 8 newborns with omphalitis, 3 cases were male (38%), 75% were caesarian section. Six of 8 specimens were found Proteus mirabilis with quite similar antibiogram. The median incubation period was 3 days. After got oral antibiotic, all cases were improve in 3-5 days without any complication. Laboratory results from environment were not compatible with results from cases but from observation and interviewing health personnel, there were some risk processes of newborn to get infected.
Conclusion: This report is the first report of nosocomial neonatal omphalitis outbreak in Lampang regional hospital in 10 years. There was no additional case after two months from the infection control unit was implemented prevention and control measures but the target surveillance from the infection control ward nurses still going on.
