Evaluation of Adverse Events Following Immunization (AEFI) Surveillance, Buengkan Province, 2011-2013

Abstract

The evaluation of adverse events following immunization (AEFI) surveillance, Buengkan Province (2011- 2013) was a retrospective descriptive study. The study objectives were to assess the quantitative and qualitative attributes of the AEFI surveillance system on the child under 13 years who were vaccinated in Buengkan Hospital under the Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI) and revisited to the hospital within 28 days. A structured questionnaire was used to interview the staff. Descriptive statistics were used to describe the system. Although total number of AEFI cases were reported in the national disease notifiable system (R506), there was no reporting in the AEFI system and no guideline in Buengkan hospital. Despite that, Sensitivity of the R506 was 14.3%, with many under-reporting cases. Based on the qualitative research, the directors recognized the importance of the system. However, the reporting rate was low because the public health did not know the reporting criteria and guideline. We had trained all the officers about reporting in the AEFI system to improve the system.
