The Outcomes of Nursing Practice Guidelines for Preventing Anesthesia-Related Complications in Adult Patients after General Anesthesia at Phonphisai Hospital,Nong Khai Province

Abstract
This quasi-experimental study aimed to compare the outcomes of implementing nursing practice guidelines for preventing anesthesia-related complications in adult patients after general anesthesia at Phonphisai Hospital, Nong Khai Province. The sample consisted of 68 adult patients who received general anesthesia, divided into an experimental group (34 patients) and a control group (34 patients). The sample size was calculated using G*Power with an effect size of 0.5, a significance level of .05, and a power of .80. In addition, four personnel who used the guideline participated in the satisfaction assessment. The research instruments included nursing practice guidelines for preventing anesthesia-related complications, a patient record form, the Quality of Recovery-40 questionnaire (QoR-40), and a user satisfaction questionnaire. Content validity was verified by three experts, yielding a CVI of 0.85. Reliability coefficients for the QoR-40 and satisfaction questionnaire were 0.88 and 0.90, respectively. Data were collected from January 1 to April 30, 2025, and analyzed using descriptive statistics and independent t-test.
The results showed that baseline characteristics of the two patient groups were comparable. Vital signs and PAR scores at admission to and discharge from the recovery room were generally similar. Pain scores at 0, 15, 30, and 45 minutes were comparable; however, at 60 minutes the experimental group had lower pain scores than the control group. Anesthesia-related complications were less frequent in the experimental group, particularly nausea, vomiting, and dizziness. The quality of recovery at 24 hours after surgery in the experimental group was higher than that in the control group. Personnel satisfaction with the guideline was at the highest level.
In conclusion, the nursing practice guideline reduced pain, decreased common anesthesia-related complications, and improved postoperative recovery quality. The guideline should be considered for use in post-anesthesia care in community hospital settings.
