Development and Effect of Video Media combined with Scenario on Knowledge and Practice of Nurses in Caring for Patients with Percutaneous Transhepatic Biliary Drainage at Udonthani Cancer Hospital

Abstract

          This research and development study aimed to develop and examine the effects of video media combined with simulation scenarios on the knowledge and practice of professional nurses caring for patients with percutaneous transhepatic biliary drainage at Udonthani Cancer Hospital. The research process comprised four phases: 1) an investigation into the problems and existing learning management practices regarding nursing care for patients with percutaneous transhepatic biliary drainage, conducted through semi-structured interviews with 10 physicians and professional nurses; 2) the development and quality validation of the video media combined with simulation scenarios; 3) a preliminary trial conducted with 15 professional nurses; and 4) subsequent revision of the media, followed by implementation and evaluation with 30 professional nurses selected through purposive sampling. The study was conducted between February 10, 2026, and July 10, 2026. Research instruments included a semi-structured interview guide, a knowledge assessment form, a nursing practice assessment form, and a satisfaction questionnaire. Qualitative data were analyzed using content analysis, while quantitative data were analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, and the Wilcoxon signed-rank test.

          The results indicated that the video media combined with simulation scenarios demonstrated a high level of feasibility for implementation, and following the intervention, the majority of participants demonstrated a high level of knowledge (96.67%). Mean knowledge scores following the intervention were significantly higher than those observed prior to the intervention (p < .05). Furthermore, nursing practice scores pertaining to the care of patients with percutaneous transhepatic biliary drainage improved significantly relative to pre-intervention levels (p < .05). Participant satisfaction with the developed media was rated at a high level.
