Abstract

This quasi-experimental research aimed to examine the effects of a brain exercise program for dementia prevention on cognitive performance among older adults at Pakkhat Hospital. The sample consisted of 32 older adults aged 60 years and above who attended the geriatric clinic at Pakkhat Hospital and were selected through purposive sampling. The research instrument was a dementia prevention program for older adults. Data collection instruments included a dementia knowledge assessment questionnaire, a cognitive performance test, a home activity participation assessment form, and a satisfaction questionnaire. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. The results revealed that after the intervention, the participants had significantly higher mean scores of dementia knowledge compared with before the intervention (p < .001). The proportion of participants with a good level of dementia knowledge increased from 75% to 97.20%. All participants demonstrated good cooperation in continuing activities at home. Consequently, cognitive performance scores after the intervention were significantly higher than before the intervention (p < .001). The mean cognitive performance score increased from 26.47 ± 1.61 before the intervention to 29.88 ± 0.32 after the intervention. In addition, the overall satisfaction of participants with the program was at the highest level.

In conclusion, the brain exercise program for dementia prevention effectively improved dementia knowledge and cognitive performance among older adults. Therefore, this program may be applied as an intervention strategy to promote cognitive health and prevent dementia among older adults in healthcare and community settings.
