Abstract

Background : There are previous studies of the effect of information and emotional support on anxiety among caregivers patient are studied about acute brain period. However, no studies about chronic brain period. This will help caregivers more, and it is important to promote and decreased anxiety caregivers.

Object : To study of effect of information and emotional support on anxiety among caregivers of brain tumor patients.

Design : Quasi - experimental study

Setting : King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital

Materials and Methods : Caregivers of brain tumor patients at the Neuro-surgery wards of king Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital were recruited by random sampling. State – trait Anxiety Inventory used to measure anxiety before and after participation stay at the hospital. The data were analyzed using: Chi square, and the statistic method used to analyze were Non-Parametric Mann- Whitney test and Non-Parametric Wilcoxon, ANCOVA by SPSS.
Result : This study, evaluated the difference between the experimental group and control group from STAI – Y on 1st and 3rd day before and after receiving the information and emotional support. The difference was significant. Also, the 1st and 3rd day after the caregivers of brain tumor patients received the information and emotional support. The experimental group after receiving the information and emotional support program was the state anxiety significantly lower than that of the control group phase (p <0.05); however, the difference of the trait anxiety in both group was not significant.

Conclusion : The information and emotional support are created trust and confident, and led to conversation which is an important factors that reduces anxiety of caregivers who were responsible to brain tumor patient. And, anxiety on the ordinary basis continuously creates personal character that needs supports.
