Abstract

This cross-sectional descriptive study aimed to investigate the role of Village Health Volunteers (VHVs) in hypertension risk group surveillance and to examine the associations among personal characteristics, attitudes, and social support with their role performance. The sample comprised 86 VHVs at Bangwan Subdistrict Health Promoting Hospital, Kuraburi District, Phang Nga Province. Data collection was carried out using a structured questionnaire, validated by three experts with an Index of Item-Objective Congruence (IOC) of 0.67–1.00 and a reliability coefficient of 0.95, and analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics.
The results indicated that the overall performance of VHVs in hypertension risk group surveillance was at a high level (M = 4.37, SD = 0.54). Considering each domain, curative care/basic care had the highest mean score (M = 4.48), followed by rehabilitation (M = 4.40), disease prevention (M = 4.39), and health promotion had the lowest mean score (M = 4.21), with all domains rated at a high level. Factors statistically significantly correlated with VHVs' role performance (p < 0.05) included attitude toward surveillance, which demonstrated a moderate positive correlation (r = 0.451), and social support, which showed a high positive correlation (r = 0.634).
These findings can serve as guidelines for Subdistrict Health Promoting Hospitals and relevant agencies in formulating plans and policies for hypertension risk group surveillance by VHVs, with emphasis on strengthening positive attitudes and social support to improve the efficiency of community-based surveillance and disease prevention.
