Abstract

This quasi-experimental research, utilizing a one-group pretest-posttest design, aimed to study and evaluate the changes in heat-preventive health behaviors resulting from the implementation of the developed "HEAT SMART: Health Literacy against Heat Hazards" program. The purposive sample consisted of 30 elderly participants aged 60 and above residing under theoperational responsibility of the Health Promotion Center 4, Saraburi. Research instruments used for data collection and intervention included a 4-dimension health literacy enhancement program and a comprehensive questionnaire assessing environmental health literacy and specific health behaviors. Collected data were systematically analyzed using descriptive statistics and paired t-test. The results revealed that the sample had an equal proportion of males and females (50.0% each), with a mean age of 67.47 years, and 70.0% of them suffered from chronic diseases. After fully receiving the program, the overall health literacy level of the participants significantly increased from a poor level (ð‘ĨĖ„ = 2.44) to an excellent level (ð‘ĨĖ„ = 4.32) at the .05 statistical significance level. Among all aspects, the health decision-making dimension achieved the highest average score (ð‘ĨĖ„ = 4.38$). Regarding heat-preventive health behaviors, the overall score significantly improved from a poor level (ð‘ĨĖ„ = 1.72$) to an excellent level (ð‘ĨĖ„ = 2.74) at the .05 level. The top three most improved behaviors were washing hands before meals, consuming freshly cooked food while abstaining from alcohol, and drinking clean water frequently during the day. In conclusion, the HEAT SMART program is highly effective in enhancing environmental health literacy and modifying heat-preventive behaviors among the elderly. It particularly strengthens information-verification and critical decision-making skills to effectively reduce the risk of heatstroke in high heat index areas.
