Abstract

Background: Dengue diseases, dengue fever (DF) and Dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) is a major public health problem in Thailand. The Dengue diseases incidence reported by the passive surveillance from Kampheangphet Provincial Health Offices was increasing trend in past 5 years. We conducted the surveillance evaluation of dengue disease in Meuang district, Kamphaengphet province with aimed to describe the surveillance system, to know the attributes of both qualitative and quantitative and to recommend the improvement of dengue surveillance system in Kamphaengphet hospital.
Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted. The population was patient at Kamphaengphet Hospital who lives in Meuang district. We recruited the medical records by using ICD 10 diagnosis between 1st January and 31st December 2013. We collected data from surveillance Report 506, individual case and epidemiological outbreak investigation report including the laboratory records of dengue virus. We analyzed data by SPFF program. We also interviewed the staffs in the hospital for qualitative attributes. Results: The sensitivity of dengue diseases in the hospital was 76.50% with positive predictive value 93.60%. The accuracy of data for sex and visit date was 100% followed by age, address and onset was 99.15%, 77.89% and 40.00% respectively. The representativeness was good for gender of dengue cases. Among 381 medical records were met case definition but 94.35% of records were reported. The timeliness was 92.90% for investigation and control of dengue in the community after detection. Kamphaengphet Hospital Dengue Surveillances was simplicity, flexibility, stability, timeliness and usefulness.
Conclusions: The overall dengue surveillance at Kamphaengphet was good but the sensitivity and accuracy of onset of dengue surveillance need to improve.
