Abstract

Introduction: Pressure ulcers are a significant problem among bedridden patients, adversely affecting their quality of life. The development of evidence-based nursing practice guidelines is essential to enhance the effectiveness of prevention and patient care at the primary care level.

Objectives: To examine the effects of a nursing practice guideline on reducing the risk of pressure ulcer development among bedridden patients.

Methodology: This study employed a quasi-experimental design using a one-group pretest–posttest approach. The sample consisted of 21 bedridden patients at risk of developing pressure ulcers, selected through purposive sampling. Research instruments included a nursing practice guideline for pressure ulcer prevention and the Braden scale for predicting pressure ulcer risk. Data were collected over a three-month period and analyzed using descriptive statistics and McNemar’s test.

Results: After implementing the nursing practice guideline, the number of patients at risk of developing pressure ulcers significantly decreased (p-value < .05).

Conclusion: The developed nursing practice guideline was effective in reducing the risk of pressure ulcer development among bedridden patients in primary care settings.

Implications: The guideline should be continuously implemented in the study area and expanded to other primary care networks with similar contexts. Additionally, practical training programs should be provided for primary caregivers to ensure sustainable prevention of pressure ulcers in home settings.
