Abstract

Introduction: Thailand’s transition to a complete-aged society has increased the number of skipped-generation families, particularly in rural Northeastern Thailand, where older adults often become the primary caregivers of children in early childhood.

Objectives: To analyze the roles of older adults in caring for children in early childhood in skipped-generation families, their impacts on both caregivers and children, and strategies to enhance caregiving capacity in the context of Northeastern Thailand.

Key contents: The roles of older adults in caring for children in early childhood in skipped-generation families include providing daily care, nurturing and discipline, transmitting cultural values, and supporting children's learning and development. The impacts on both older adults and children in early childhood involve positive and negative consequences across health, psychological, social, and economic dimensions. Approaches to strengthening older adults’ caregiving capacity include enhancing their knowledge and skills in child care, developing community support networks, and promoting digital literacy among older adults.

Conclusion: Older adults play a vital role in caring for children in early childhood in skipped-generation families; therefore, their caregiving capacity and support systems should be strengthened.

Implications: Public health agencies, local administrative organizations, and child development centers should provide training and support programs to enhance older adults’ knowledge and skills in child care and development.
