Abstract

This research was the descriptive study aimed to investigate the factors affecting pain in adult critical patients. The sample group consisted of 198 patients admitted to medical intensive care unit (MICU), Sakon Nakhon hospital, selected through purposive sampling. The research instruments were the question naires forgeneral information, pain level and factor saffecting pain in adult critical patients, as well as the assessments of mental state and anxiety. The content validity was assessed by five
experts, with content validity index of 0.80 and 0.96, respectively. Data analysis employed statistics included frequency, percentage, mean andstandarddeviation. The factor saffecting pain were analyzed using Pearson’s correlation coefficient.

The results revealed that87.87% ofpatients experienced pain, mostly 63.21% had the moderate pain level and 36.78% had mild pain level. The activities caused the most pain were the procedures such as intubation or extubating (89.40%) and suctioning (88.90%). The factors affecting pain that correlated positively with pain including personal factors, comorbidities showed low correlation with
pain (r =0.20, p = 0.005), while the illness severity factors, insertion or removal of NG tubes showed moderate correlations with pain (r = 0.46, p = 0.001). The nursing activities factors during MICU admission that showed positively moderate correlations with pain were bed bathing (r = 0.44, p = 0.001) and repositioning (r = 0.43, p = 0.001). However, the factors in emotional and mental states ofcritical patients did not show correlation with pain.
