Causal Factors Influencing Motorcycle Helmet Usage Decisions among Pibulsongkram Rajabhat University Students: A Qualitative Study

Introduction: Accidents resulting from non-helmet use while riding motorcycles represent a significant public health issue in Thailand, particularly among university students.
Objective: To investigate the causal factors influencing motorcycle helmet usage decisions among students at Pibulsongkram Rajabhat University in Phitsanulok Province.
Methodology: This study employed a descriptive qualitative research approach. Data was collected through in-depth interviews using semi-structured interview guides. The key informants comprised 10 undergraduate students aged 20-24 years. Data collection occurred between December 2024 and January 2025, and thematic analysis was utilized for data interpretation.
Results: The findings revealed four primary factors influencing helmet usage decisions among Pibulsongkram Rajabhat University students: 1) Safety awareness, with students who had direct accident experience showing higher tendency to wear helmets; 2) The balance between comfort and safety, with hot weather conditions and inconvenience of carrying helmets posing significant barriers; 3) Social environmental influences, including peer groups, family, and institutional policies; and 4) Risk perception, with students often underestimating risks for short distances or when traveling on university roads.
Conclusion: Students' decisions to wear helmets result from personal factors (safety awareness and risk perception) and environmental factors (comfort, social influence, and law enforcement). Understanding these factors is essential for designing effective safety promotion measures.
Implications: Educational institutions should increase enforcement of helmet regulations on campus, organize awareness campaigns highlighting risks in short-distance riding, and improve facilities for helmet storage in educational areas to reduce convenience-related barriers.
