This Research and Development (R&D) study aimed to develop a health education model to promote exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) before hospital discharge in primiparous mothers with vaginal delivery, and to examine the effectiveness of the developed model. The study was conducted in three phases: Phase 1 involved assessing the situation and needs from 15 multidisciplinary team members. Phase 2 focused on model development, synthesizing findings from Phase 1 with theoretical concepts. Phase 3 tested the model's effectiveness on 20 primiparous postpartum mothers. Research instruments included semi-structured interview guides, a knowledge test, and a Self-Efficacy Questionnaire. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and the Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test.
The key findings were: 1) Model Development: The developed health education model is a Blended Learning Model emphasizing a learner-centered approach. It integrates “Bedside Coaching” (hands-on practice and demonstration) by the multidisciplinary team with digital media such as short videos and Infographic manuals for supplementary learning and self-review at home. 2) Effectiveness on Knowledge: Post-intervention knowledge scores (M=16.40, SD=2.60) were significantly higher than pre-intervention scores (M=12.30, SD=1.97) (Z=-3.900, p=.000). 3) Effectiveness on Self-Efficacy: Post-intervention Self-Efficacy scores (M=2.85, SD=0.43) were significantly higher than pre-intervention scores (M=2.17, SD=0.40) (Z=-3.194, p=.001).
Conclusion and Recommendations: The developed health education model is effective in increasing knowledge and building self-confidence in EBF among primiparous mothers. It is recommended that this model be adopted as the hospital's standard Clinical Practice Guideline (CNPG), and follow-up studies should monitor exclusive breastfeeding rates at 4 to 6 months postpartum to confirm long-term outcomes.
