Abstract

Background: Life table and life expectancy were important indexes for planning and evaluation in public health program. However, the life table study among small population as district level in Thailand was limited. The objectives were aimed to construct a life table of Nonghi and Phanomphrai District population and identify difference in life table properties and life expectancy of birth between data from civil registration and provincial health office (PHO).
Methods: Population data of PHO and civil registration from 2011–2014 were included to construct the life table using method as in the manual for construction of life table at provincial level of Thailand, 2003. And the margin of error of life expectancy at birth was calculated by Chiang’s method. Then, the data of life table and life expectancy at birth results between two data sources were compared.
Results: Totally number of population were 78,191–98,150 population. The number of mortalities were 504–791. The life expectancy at birth of male population range from 66.9–78.6 years (PHO data: 66.9–70.3 years, civil registration data; 69.5–78.6 years) and female population range from 71.6–82.1 years (PHO data: 75.1–79.3 years, civil registration data; 71.6–82.1 years). Among population data, the PHO data had less number of working age group than the civil registration data. Additionally, the difference in life expectancy at birth between two data sources were caused by the difference in probability of death.
Conclusion: The life table and life expectancy could be constructed from data at district level. However, the difference in population and mortality due to the process of registration may affect the life expectancy at birth. The study of data validity and monitoring the population change using life table method should be conducted in the future.
