Development of a Practice Promotion Model for Antimicrobial Resistance Prevention among Nurses at Thungsong Hospital, Nakhon Si Thammarat Province

Abstract

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a major global health threat that affects the quality of patient care and increases the burden on healthcare systems. Developing an effective model to promote nurses’ practices in preventing AMR infections is essential to enhance knowledge, improve compliance with infection control standards, and reduce the spread of resistant pathogens sustainably among patients and within healthcare organizations. Objective: This study aimed to develop a model, examine the effects of the developed model, and explore nurses’ opinions toward the model promoting practices for the prevention of antimicrobial-resistant infections. Methods: This research employed a research and development (R&D) approach. The participants were 41 registered nurses of all professional levels working in inpatient wards at Thungsong hospital, Nakhon Si Thammarat province, selected through random sampling. The experimental group was introduced to the developed model for promoting infection prevention practices against antimicrobial resistance. The research instruments consisted of a knowledge assessment form, a practice observation checklist, the developed promotion model, and a questionnaire measuring participants’ opinions toward the model. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, McNemar, and paired t-test.


The results indicated that after the intervention, the participants demonstrated significantly higher knowledge scores and improved practices in the care of patients with antimicrobial-resistant infections at the 0.05 significance level. Furthermore, the participants reported high to very high levels of satisfaction with the developed model.


In conclusion, the developed model for promoting nurses’ practices in preventing antimicrobial-resistant infections effectively enhanced knowledge and improved practice performance, contributing to better infection prevention and sustainable nursing quality within healthcare settings.
