Abstract

The 2014 FIFA World Cup is hosted by Brazil from 12 June to 13 July 2014. The vast majority area of Brazil has a tropical climate. There are several outbreaks of tropical diseases. One of the risks of tropical diseases is vector borne diseases such as yellow fever, dengue fever, malaria and chaga disease. Rabies is one of zoonotic disease that need to be concerned. Most of those diseases are occurred in rural areas and Amazon rain forests, except for dengue fever which is found in urban areas. Gastro intestinal tract infections, including diarrhea, typhoid and hepatitis A, are common in travelers. World Cup in Brazil can also increase risk of infection from vaccine preventable diseases that are endemic in the area. The health risks will depend on where they are going and what they are doing. If travelers only visit at stadiums and urban areas, diarrheal diseases and vaccine preventable diseases are needed to pay attention mostly. Precautions Food and water hygiene, drinking water from a safe source (bottled), getting advice on vaccine from a vaccination center and frequent hand-washing are the best ways to avoid getting illness. If travelers also plan for ecotourism, insect bite avoidance day and night by using insect repellents or cover up to protect attack from mosquitoes to prevent vector borne diseases. Whenever having any symptoms, such as fever or flu-like illness, seeking immediate medical advice and telling doctor about recent travel to South America would be the great way to make enjoyable and healthy trip among travelers to the World Cup.
