Tuberculosis Notification Coverage of Trang Hospital

Abstract

Introduction: The 12^th Public Health region was among 4 regions with the lowest coverage of tuberculosis (TB) notification in Thailand during 2016-2020. In 2021, the 12^th Zonal TB center Yala responsible for TB control in the region then requested data from hospitals for checking with the National Tuberculosis Information Program (NTIP).

Methods: This descriptive study aimed to evaluate the notification coverage of tuberculosis cases of Trang hospital in NTIP and to identify the characteristics of non-notified cases; by collecting data indicating TB diagnosis from the databases of Trang hospital during October 2020–April 2021, comparing with TB cases notified in NTIP during fiscal year 2018-2023, and validating with medical records.

Results: According to the hospital databases, there were 687 cases with indicated TB diagnosis. Checking with NTIP; 421 cases have been notified, but not for the 266 cases. Validating with the medical records; no available data or no records during 2020-2021 were found for 31 cases. The diagnosis of TB, TB contacts, non-TB, and inconclusive TB were made for 154, 40, 17, and 24 cases, respectively. Finally, after checking again with medical records and NTIP; there were 567 TB cases, but only 479 cases have been notified (84.5%). Among 88 non-notified cases, 57 cases were diagnosed as TB, but the other 31 were not. Laboratory confirmed TB, co-morbidities or serious conditions, and not follow the TB appointment or referral were 38.6% vs 100%, 35.1% vs 35.5%, and 22.8% vs 0% among the 2 groups; respectively.
